The Franklin Regional School District, in collaboration with the United Way of Westmoreland County’s “School Readiness Initiative,” looks forward to welcoming parents of preschoolers and providing numerous opportunities for them and their children to become familiar with the staff, kindergarten program, and elementary facilities before they enter school.

The official Kindergarten Registration window for the 2017-2018 school year was March 13, 2017 through April 28, 2017. Parents must have registered their child within that window to guarantee placement at their neighborhood school.  Registrations taken after April 28, 2017 will be placed based upon enrollment numbers. As a reminder, children must celebrate their 5th birthday on or prior to September 1, 2017 to be eligible to enroll for kindergarten for 2017-2018.

On August 9, 2017, incoming kindergarten students and their parents participate in an informal “Meet & Greet” day at Newlonsburg.  The event begins at 11:15 A.M.  Children meet their official homeroom kindergarten teacher, and once again have personal contact with the building principal, counselor, and nurse.  During this event, students learn about bus safety, practice lunch procedures, and have a healthy snack.  Volunteer mentors offer building tours and children have the opportunity to meet fellow classmates and play together on the school playground.  Parents new to the kindergarten experience meet one another and sign up to visit the school with their child on a “Staggered Start” day.

The final kindergarten transition phase is “Staggered Start.”  This experience takes place for all new kindergarteners and a parent on one of the first two days of school.  For 2017-18, Staggered Start will be offered in either an AM or PM time on both August 23 and August 24.  The parent-child team come to school for an abbreviated school day with a small group of classmates.  They spend time with the teacher, explore the classroom, ask questions, participate in activities, and learn more about the expectations of kindergarten.  At this time, parents have the opportunity to ask any last minute questions and share concerns regarding their child’s first official day flying solo as a kindergarten student.
